A devastating incident occurred at a Namami Gange project site on the banks of the Alakananda River in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, where 15 died in Chamoli due to an electric shock from the railing.

The injured individuals are being referred to higher medical facilities, such as AIIMS Rishikesh, via helicopter.

To ensure a thorough investigation, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a Magisterial inquiry into the incident:

State Health Minister Dhan Singh Rawat, present in Chamoli, verified that the tragic incident claimed the lives of 15 individuals while seven others suffered injuries. Efforts are underway to airlift the injured individuals to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced medical treatment.

Establishing a magisterial inquiry aims to examine the circumstances leading to the incident and determine accountability. The mishap occurred amidst persistent rainfall that has been lashing Uttarakhand recently.

The constant rain caused the water level of the Alakananda River to rise significantly. Consequently, approximately 3,000 cusecs of additional water were released from the dam of the GVK hydroelectric project in Srinagar, Pauri district.

The State Emergency Operation Center promptly alerted Pauri, Tehri, Haridwar, and Dehradun district magistrates, advising caution in these areas due to the water release. Residents of Haridwar, Rishikesh, and other regions were advised to stay away from river banks and prioritize their safety.
