Following on from 1883 and set before Taylor Sheridan’s Western show-turned-empire Yellowstone on Paramount, 1923 serves as both a sequel and a prequel. A generation of the Dutton dynasty before the time of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren is chronicled, much like in the 19th-century original.
Fans of the cowboy stereotype can celebrate. It looks like the flagship show is in trouble, but 1923 Season 2 is on the way, so here’s what we know so far.
1923 Season 2 Release Date
1923 Season 2 doesn’t have a release date right now, but there’s a good chance it could arrive on screens in late 2023, if not 2024. The renewal for season two of 1923 was announced in early February, in contrast to 1883, which is a self-contained story outside of the Bass Reeves offshoot.
It is not shocking that its premiere attracted 7.4 million viewers, the largest of any cable program in the United States in 2022.

The first episode of the first season premiered on Paramount+ in December 2022, after having begun production in July 2022. The timeline for Season 2’s release is mainly dependent on when production for that season begins.

1923 Season 2 Plot
While we don’t have a detailed plot summary, Season 2 of 1923 will likely continue to focus on the Dutton family and their struggles during the range war.
According to the official plot summary, Season 1 will “introduce a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west and the Duttons who call it home.” When new information becomes available, we’ll post it here.
1923 Season 2 Cast
In Season 2, much of the original cast of 1923 is scheduled to return. John Dutton Sr., played by James Badge Dale, was killed in Episode 3, therefore he won’t be back. Marley Shelton’s character, Emma Dutton, killed herself after James’ death, so she won’t be back for Season 2, and Jennifer Ehle’s Sister Mary was killed in a vengeful act by Teonna, so we won’t see her either.
Ford told The Hollywood Reporter that he is unable to wait for production on Season 2 to begin because of the difficulties that have plagued Indiana Jones 5 and the premiere of Shrinking on Apple TV.
“I took the jobs without reading the scripts, trusting that the individuals behind the projects would provide me with something worthwhile to work from. I was unprepared for how demanding 1923 would be, but I can now say that it was well worth the effort. “I can’t wait to return for another season of both,” he exclaimed.
