How ChatGPT Will Always Change What Customers Expect?
At the time of this writing, ChatGPT has been around for only three weeks. Despite the limited time, it has been sufficient to permanently alter many people’s views on artificial intelligence (AI). And it has already started to change consumers’ anticipations.
For many people, myself included, this is a watershed moment in the development of technology. Box CEO and prominent tech commentator Aaron Levie said, “ChatGPT is one of those rare moments in technology where you see a glimmer of how everything is going to be different going forward.” Mark Cuban, a parent himself, has added his two cents.
My own children and I have gone through something very similar. The popular conception of AI as Skynet from the Terminator movies will be replaced by a more accurate one after the release of ChatGPT.
What stands out, then? To everyone’s surprise, it’s not just the AI itself. The 2020 release of GPT-3 featured many innovative functions. A week before the ChatGPT, Meta unveiled Cicero, a diplomacy bot that could compete with humans. In contrast, ChatGPT’s strength lies in its “general AI” qualities, as well as it’s free (for the time being), user-friendly nature.
ChatGPT is available to anyone with an email address and has a wide variety of applications. The potential benefits are obvious to anyone who tries it out, regardless of their field of study. (I didn’t actually use the word “applications.” In spite of its impressive features, at the moment it is still just a toy. It’s a toy; albeit, a very impressive one.
It’s also debatable. For instance, Stack Overflow has restricted the use of this tool to automatically generate answers due to the fact that it can produce fully functional code examples. The worry is not so much that it can generate code (Github Copilot has been doing this for over a year), but rather that its answers sound too much like those of a human. From my own experience, I can attest to the fact that while it tends to be optimistic, it is not always spot on.

In reality, however, technological advancement always includes iteration and improvement. There is no better way to improve technology than to put it in the hands of real users, which is why ChatGPT is being released to the general public. It’s worth noting that Gmail had a relatively small number of users at the outset, from which it was able to gain valuable experience. In just a few weeks, I’m sure the team behind ChatGPT has received a staggering amount of feedback.
The fact that ChatGPT can be used by so many people is, in my opinion, its most significant implication. For me, it’s the conversation at the holiday get-together, specifically what’s being brought up as noteworthy or novel. So far this year, I haven’t had to bring up ChatGPT very often, but it has come up frequently nonetheless.
Hearing about it from people outside the tech industry tells a clear story: it has already increased the visibility of general artificial intelligence and is showing the masses what is possible, which will feed into their expectations for the future of technology.
Jeff Bezos comes to mind; he once said something to the effect that customers’ wants and needs are always evolving. The widespread adoption, increasing popularity, and undeniable power of ChatGPT and similar technologies will feed into consumer expectations of all technology, just as people’s awe-inspiring experiences as consumers translate to their expectations of enterprise software. No more can be done to put the genie back in its bottle.
