The grieving parents of 34-year-old Bengaluru engineer Atul Subhash, who died by suicide on December 9, have alleged that their son was “tortured” by his estranged wife and her family, leading to his tragic death.
In an emotional media interaction, Atul’s mother broke down and fainted, while his father stated, “He was tortured so much that he hid it from us because he didn’t want us to suffer.”
Atul, originally from Uttar Pradesh, was found dead in his Bengaluru apartment. He left behind a 1.5-hour-long video and a detailed 24-page suicide note accusing his estranged wife, Nikita, and her family of harassment.
The note detailed years of alleged abuse, including legal disputes over false accusations, demands for high maintenance payments, and harassment during court proceedings. Among the allegations were claims of dowry demands, unnatural sexual practices, and even murder.
Atul’s family described his long struggle with the harassment, which they say took a severe mental toll on him. His father equated the emotional torment to murder, stating, “Torturing someone is the same as killing.” Legal battles between the couple had been ongoing in a family court in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Following a complaint by Atul’s brother, the Bengaluru police have filed a case against Nikita and her family under sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. Section 108, which deals with abetment to suicide, is a non-bailable offense.
Nikita’s family, however, has refuted the allegations. Her mother told India Today TV, “Atul Subhash has taken out his frustration on us. These claims are baseless, and I will present all the evidence to the world. My daughter can never abet anyone to commit suicide.”
The incident has sparked discussions about mental health and marital disputes, as well as the need for better support systems to address emotional distress. While police investigations are ongoing, the case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the devastating consequences of strained personal relationships and unresolved conflicts.
