In a span of just 24 hours, Himachal Pradesh witnessed two separate incidents resulting in the loss of 16 lives. Chief Minister confirmed these incidents and extended his sympathies to the affected families:

In Shimla, the catastrophe continued with reports suggesting that 15 to 20 individuals might be trapped under debris due to two landslides. Deputy Commissioner of Shimla, Aditya Negi, acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

A cloudburst in Mamligh village of Kandaghat subdivision in Solan led to the loss of homes and structures, with six people fortunate enough to be rescued. The victims in Solan were identified, and Chief Minister Sukhu directed authorities to provide support to the affected families.

The rain-related incidents have taken a heavy toll, with 21 casualties reported within 48 hours. The state’s emergency operation center reported the closure of 752 roads due to the calamitous conditions.

In response, Chief Minister Sukhu decided to shut down all educational institutions in the region to ensure the safety of students. He engaged with District Collectors to assess the damage and instructed administrative staff to maintain essential services.

The torrential rains were attributed to a fresh Western Disturbance, as per the Indian Meteorological Department. The Monsoon trough’s alignment along the Himalayan foothills coupled with South-westerly Arabian Sea monsoonal winds led to this devastating impact.

The IMD’s forecast indicated continued heavy rainfall across multiple districts in Himachal Pradesh, posing an ongoing threat to residents and infrastructure.

Himachal Pradesh emerged as one of the worst-affected states due to the monsoon’s fury, suffering a staggering financial loss of ₹ 7020.28 crore. The monsoon season, starting on June 24, brought immense hardship, with a death toll of 257 lives due to various causes.

Landslides, flash floods, and accidents were major contributors. Additionally, thousands of houses, shops, and infrastructure suffered damage, causing further distress.

The calamity’s extent is evident from the alarming statistics – 90 landslides and 55 flash flood incidents occurred, with nearly 450 roads, including National Highways, rendered impassable.

Moreover, over 1,800 electricity supply schemes and 59 water supply schemes were disrupted. The state’s authorities are grappling with the daunting task of rehabilitation and restoration amid these persistent challenges.
