Nate Colbert Has Died at the Age of 76: According to the organization, Nate Colbert passed away on Thursday at the age of 76. Colbert held the record for the most home runs in San Diego Padres franchise history. There was no evidence to suggest a particular cause of death. Colbert, a founding member of the Padres, contributed to the team’s success by hitting 163 home runs between the years 1969 and 1974.

In addition to his work on the field, Padres Chairman Peter Seidler noted that Nate was dedicated to the betterment of his community in a statement that the team released. Through his ministry, he volunteered his time to assist young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. He was an engaging person who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The first baseman had a brief stint with the Astros before being selected by the Padres in the expansion draught. Prior to that, he had been with the Astros. From 1971 until 1973, he was selected to play in the All-Star Game, and in 1972, he finished eighth in the voting for National League Most Valuable Player.

In 1972, Colbert became only the second player in the history of the major leagues to accomplish this feat by hitting five home runs in a single major league doubleheader. In addition to that, he drove in 13 runs while playing against the Braves in the historic game.

Back issues limited his playing time during his 10-year career, but he still managed to suit up for the Tigers, the Expos, and the Athletics before calling it quits in 1976.

In 1999, the man who grew up in Missouri was inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame for the very first time. The slugger made the trip back to San Diego in August 2021 so that he could be the one to throw out the first pitch before a Padres game.
