He was one of the first people to join the punk band The Germs. From 1993 to 1994, he was Nirvana’s road guitarist. After Kurt Cobain died, Nirvana broke up, and its drummer Dave Grohl became the lead singer of the rock band Foo Fighters.
Soon after, Smear joined Foo Fighters on guitar, and the group has since made five studio records and one live album. He is known for playing guitar with The Germs, Vagina Dentata, Nirvana, and Foo Fighters.
