Adams’s interest in cartooning dates back to his childhood, although he ultimately decided to pursue a more conventional career path, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Hartwick College in 1979.

Early Career and Dilbert Success

He then worked for Pacific Bell, when his first Dilbert cartoon was published. Adams woke up early to draw before work. Mike Goodwin inspired Dilbert. He unsuccessfully pitched Dilbert to the New Yorker and Playboy.

Pacific Bell employed him from 1986–1995. His Dilbert characters were inspired by his many coworkers. In 1989, he developed Dilbert with United Media while working at Pacific Bell. Dilbert royalty payments started at $368.62.

Dilbert appeared in 100 publications in 1991 and 400 by 1994. Dilbert’s fame developed slowly but gradually, allowing him to quit his job and become a cartoonist. 800 newspapers carried Dilbert by 1996. Adams published “The Dilbert Principle” that year.

Adams earned the 1997 National Cartoonists Society Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist and Best Newspaper Comic Strip. “Dilbert” won a 1999 Primetime Emmy for its 1998–2000 run. By 2000, 2,000 newspapers in 57 countries and 19 languages carried the comic.

Since then, Dilbert has become hugely popular, earning Adams money from merchandising, books, and their short-lived animated comedy. Adams’ triumph hasn’t been without controversy. He admits to entering websites under a phony name to protect himself. Dilbert appears in newspapers everywhere.

Since Adams’ focal dystonia makes it difficult for him to maintain a steady hand for extended periods of time, he now relies on a graphics tablet to create his artwork. After years of dealing with spasmodic dysphonia, a disorder that manifests itself in the abnormal behavior of the vocal cords, he finally decided to get surgery in July 2008.

Adams and Shelly Miles tied the knot on a yacht in San Francisco in July 2006. Miles was working at, and Adams was a member of, a gym where the two eventually crossed paths. The two children from Miles’ previous marriage, Savannah and Justin, were adopted by Adams.

Justin, only 18 years old, tragically passed away in 2018 from a fentanyl overdose. After divorcing in 2014, Adams and Miles remained friendly. On Christmas Day of 2019, Adams revealed his engagement to model Kristina Basham on his podcast. On July 11, 2020, the couple tied the knot. Basham is a father of two from a previous marriage.
