Starfield Release Date: When Bethesda finally releases an original role-playing game (RPG) in 2023 with Starfield, it will have been 25 years since the company last did so. The level of excitement is through the roof, which is fitting. We waited for years with only the tiniest tidbits of information being released about the Bethesda space adventure, which was first teased in 2018.
Todd Howard has been spreading around some carefully curated nuggets of Starfield information as the game’s release date draws closer. This is all in preparation for our meeting in the near future, which will be in the new year.
The release of Starfield has been pushed back to 2023, despite Bethesda having initially announced that it would occur in 2022. We are going to continue our research into the backstory of Starfield, including its various factions, characters, and settings, as well as its spaceships and navigational systems, while we have some spare time before we head out into space. The following is everything that we currently know about the upcoming role-playing game from Bethesda.
What Do We Know About Starfield Now?
Not much new data has come to light recently. When the delay to 2023 was announced, no specific release date was given, and the robot companion, Vasco, only made a brief appearance at Gamescom for photo ops.
This radio silence does not indicate apathy among the faithful. As with other Bethesda role-playing games like Skyrim and Fallout 4, potential modders have begun organizing to produce a fan patch(opens in new tab). There have been hundreds of bugs and glitches fixed by these unofficial patches in the past. One might reasonably anticipate Starfield to be, shall we say, sloppy.
Fans are also trying to piece together where in the galaxy the events of Starfield take place by studying the game’s map, or what we’ve seen of it so far. Some astrophysicists in Starfield are confident they’ve identified Altair, Barnard, and Sirius, despite the fact that only a handful of stars (including our sun, Alpha Centauri, and Porrima) have been positively identified.
Starfield’s appearance at the Xbox and Bethesda showcase in June was the last major event (aside from the delay), as it featured a substantial amount of playable content. After watching the Starfield footage (which you can do so up there), we’ve gleaned the following information.
- How big is it? There are 1,000 planets.
- Character creation: It looks pretty detailed.
- Traits: You have a lot of choices, from Empath to Alien DNA.
- Skills: “Rank” your skills by using them. Remember Oblivion?
- Ship customization: Change the look, layout, and crew.
- Ship flight: Yes, you will be getting in the cockpit.
- Crafting: Create weapon mods and conduct research projects.
- Outposts: Build your own and hire characters to work there.
- Lockpicking: Yes, it’s back. Even in space.
- Voice acting: No voice for your protagonist, sorry Fallout 4 fans.
- Worshipping a giant space serpent: Confirmed.
Let’s dig deep into the Starfield Release Date.
What Is The Starfield Release Date?
The release of Starfield is scheduled for the first half of 2023. The 11th of November, 2022 was supposed to be the release date when it was first announced. In May of 2022, Bethesda made the decision to push back the release date for both Redfall and Starfield, explaining that “The teams at Arkane Austin (Redfall) and Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield) have incredible ambitions for their games, and we want to ensure that you receive the best, most polished versions of them.”
In the meantime, fans who can’t wait have been trying to guess the precise date before it’s even been announced. As of right now, there is a hypothesis(opens in new tab) that Starfield will be released on March 23, 2023, but that is really just a guess based on some numbers shown in the trailer that may relate to the patent filed by the Wright Brothers for their flying machine all the way back in 1906.
There is no concrete evidence to support the speculation that a new Bethesda role-playing game will be released on March 23, 23:33 (the release date of Skyrim was November 11, 2011). We can only hope that Bethesda will provide us with the exact date at some point in the not-too-distant future.
How Much Will Starfield Cost?
The current standard game price of $70 USD has been raised by Sony, Activision, and Microsoft, ushering in a very pricey era for gamers. Starfield will cost $70 as well, making this a permanent increase rather than a temporary one. As luck would have it, Microsoft has made it a habit to make its latest AAA hits available on Xbox Game Pass right away after they are released. Starfield will be available on Game Pass on launch day, as was previously announced.
Here’s The First Starfield Trailer From E3 2021
You are able to view the Starfield E3 trailer on this page. A robot can be seen walking around on the ground below the scene, which is a cinematic depiction of an astronaut boarding a spaceship. We then get a good look at the ship while a voice in the background tells us, “What you’ve found is the key to unlocking… everything,” and “We’ve come to the beginning of humanity’s final journey.” The pilot is seen seated at a console where he operates a number of switches before the scene cuts to rockets being fired and the ship getting ready to take off.
You can also watch the YouTube series called Into the Starfield, which discusses the game, deconstructs its inspirations, and showcases new concept art (including some gorgeous animated versions). The second episode presents some dialogue and includes some discussion of the factions.

Here’s Our First Look at Starfield Gameplay in 2022
Todd Howard brought plenty of examples of Starfield gameplay(opens in new tab) to the 2022 Xbox & Bethesda showcase. We are introduced to a Bethesda open world in space on a desolate sulfurous moon called Kreet, where gunplay against space bandits ensues. NPC dialogue snippets shed light on the game’s overarching objective and the various groups the player can join as they venture out.
We get a look at Bethesda’s “most flexible yet” character creator, which Howard praises. The skills you pick at each level increase in power as you use them, thanks to a ranking system. There will be a crafting system that allows players to alter and personalize their space weapons. While exploring alien worlds, players will be able to set up outposts using what appear to be more robust and detailed mechanisms than those found in Fallout 4.
Then, Todd pulls out the big guns and shows off the ability to modify ships in Starfield. Each player’s spaceship can be built from the ground up with components from a variety of manufacturers to achieve their ideal appearance, layout, and performance. The scope of Starfield is discussed as a capstone to the gameplay reveal. Landing on any planet in any of the game’s over a hundred star systems is possible, giving players access to a fully explorable galaxy with more than a thousand planets.
Starfield’s Character Creation, Skills, and Traits
During the Xbox and Bethesda showcase in June, we got a good look at the character creation and leveling processes. For your character’s physical appearance, we saw some templates, body shapes and sizes, skin tones, and hairstyles but no facial details.
Backgrounds include combat medic, bouncer, professor, and homesteader, and each comes with three initial skill points. Character abilities include medicine, lasers, persuasion, bargaining, and another standard fare from Bethesda role-playing games.
According to Todd Howard, the Starfield system “combines the best from our previous games” when it comes to skill progression, so you can expect to gain access to new abilities as you gain experience and to improve your existing abilities through use or by completing challenges.
If that isn’t enough roleplaying for you, Starfield also has traits, a system that is familiar to other games. These are all options for your character, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, while “Spaced” improves health and stamina in space, it has the opposite effect on Earth. Howard claims that these characteristics are solvable “problems” that can be abandoned if they become too bothersome; he also claims that there will be a side quest for each characteristic that will neutralize it, eliminating the benefit and drawbacks it provides.
Also, present in Starfield is a variety of religions, including one that venerates a cosmic serpent. These are selected at the time of character creation, and each one is associated with a few specific characteristics. Being “Raised Universal” qualifies you for a price cut at “the church store,” but prevents you from shopping at “the Enlightened store.” We don’t know if the Enlightened are members of a different religion or a group of space atheists. As it stands, picking a religion seems to pit you against others.
