Tahir Hussain joins AIMIM, to contest Mustafabad seat in Delhi Elections; BJP raises strong objections

Tahir-Hussain

Former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, accused in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, has joined Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM).

Hussain, who faces charges related to the communal violence, will represent AIMIM as its candidate in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections from the Mustafabad constituency.

Owaisi announced the development on social media platform X, highlighting that Hussain’s family and supporters also joined the party.

“MCD councillor Tahir Hussain joined AIMIM and will be our candidate from Mustafabad Assembly Constituency in the upcoming Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections. His family members and supporters met me today and joined the party,” Owaisi wrote.

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, which has accused AIMIM of attempting to incite communal tensions. BJP leader Kapil Mishra alleged that Hussain was directly involved in the riots, claiming his house was used to stockpile petrol bombs, stones, and weapons.

He also referenced the brutal murder of IB officer Ankit Sharma, whose body was found in a drain during the riots, alleging Hussain’s involvement.

Mishra warned of potential consequences if Hussain’s candidacy leads to unrest, comparing the situation to the Shaheen Bagh protests before the last elections.

“This is a clear attempt to disrupt peace in Delhi. If riots are incited in the name of Tahir Hussain this time, there will be consequences,” he cautioned.

The move has heightened tensions ahead of the elections, with political observers anticipating a contentious campaign in the Mustafabad constituency.
