Vande Bharat Express, a flagship project of the ‘Make in India’ campaign, represents India’s pioneering effort in semi-high-speed trains. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) General Manager, BG Mallya, recently disclosed significant developments concerning Vande Bharat trains.
The introduction of a Vande Bharat sleeper train in March 2024 and the launch of the Vande Metro in January are expected to enhance India’s railway network.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Launch
The sleeper train variant of Vande Bharat is poised to become a valuable addition to India’s railway system. It will offer passengers a comfortable overnight travel option for covering long distances. The ICF is diligently working on the first Vande Bharat sleeper train, set to be unveiled in March 2024.
The Vande Bharat Metro for Short-Distance Travel
In addition to the sleeper coach, the ICF is innovating a new train type called the Vande Metro. Designed for short-distance travel, this 12-coach train is set to make its debut in January. The Vande Metro is anticipated to serve as a convenient mode of transport for commuters travelling shorter distances.

The First Non-AC Vande Bharat Train
Earlier reports indicated that India’s railways are gearing up to launch the first non-air-conditioned (AC) Vande Bharat train in October. This initiative aims to provide affordable travel options without compromising on speed or passenger comfort.

About Vande Bharat Express
Vande Bharat Express, an embodiment of the ‘Make in India’ campaign, was introduced in 2019 as India’s first indigenous Semi High-Speed train series. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the inaugural train on February 15, 2019, which initially operated between New Delhi and Varanasi. These trains are manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Future Expansion Plans
