On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, the Meerut Municipal Corporation devised a novel way to honor the great man’s birthday. The I Love Meerut selfie point at Commissionerate Square now features a figure of Mahatma Gandhi fashioned from discarded materials, courtesy of the Meerut Municipal Corporation.

The concept of creating a statue from discarded materials was ingenious, but the final product was horrifying and unsettling. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi had its face destroyed, making it appear sinister.

Anger was directed at the Meerut Municipal Corporation

People in Meerut were angry at the city government for erecting a statue of the nation’s founder that some found disturbing. The city of Meerut heard the complaints and took the statue down from the popular photo op.

The statue was considered an affront to Mahatma Gandhi due to its poor craftsmanship and unsettling appearance. People were afraid to take pictures at the designated selfie area because the statue made them look threatening.

On October 2nd, the statue was put into place

During his Mann Ki Baat episode, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh Government for pioneering the concept of city beautification via the reuse of discarded materials.

The city’s governing body came under fire for erecting a statue of Mahatma Gandhi that some residents found disturbing. The statue was unveiled on October 2 but was taken down when officials received complaints.

A used oil drum and other debris were fashioned into the statue.

Dr. Prince Raj, an artist with Eco India Innovation Company, spent one lakh rupees on the monument. The artist was commissioned to create the Mahatma Gandhi statue out of discarded materials by the Meerut Municipal Corporation.

Oil drums, cutting debris, auto-rickshaw tires, and nut bolts were utilized to construct the statue. The statue’s visage, which was completed in just 15 days, is both hideous and terrifying. Many voiced concerns about the statue, but officials ignored them. After hearing growing calls for the statue’s removal, authorities acted swiftly to do so.
