AAP to contest Delhi assembly polls solo, distancing itself from INDI Alliance

Date:

In a significant political development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal announced on Sunday that the party will contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections independently.

The elections, expected early next year, will see AAP focusing solely on its governance record as it goes head-to-head with the BJP, which is seeking to strengthen its influence in the capital.

Kejriwal’s statement, delivered at a press conference, confirmed that AAP will not form alliances for the assembly polls, signaling a potential rift within the Opposition INDI Alliance.

The coalition, comprising 26 parties, was formed to consolidate anti-BJP votes. However, tensions between AAP and Congress, both members of the bloc, have surfaced repeatedly.

Earlier this year, the two parties contested the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi together but failed to secure any seats, with the BJP claiming a clean sweep. Similar disagreements emerged in Punjab and Haryana, where AAP chose to contest alone, rejecting coalition offers.

The decision to part ways with the alliance raises questions about opposition unity as Delhi’s political climate intensifies, with key leaders from AAP, Congress, and BJP switching parties ahead of the elections.
