In the last two Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were locked in direct competition, with the Congress slipping to a distant third.
Riding high on its free electricity and water schemes, AAP successfully relegated the BJP to the sidelines.
In the 2020 polls, the BJP avoided directly addressing these schemes and faced a significant defeat, securing only eight of the 70 assembly seats.
Out of power in Delhi for 25 years, the BJP now plans to challenge AAP on its key electoral platform.
Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, chairman of the BJP’s manifesto committee, announced that the party would continue the free electricity, water supply, and women’s free bus ride schemes introduced by the Kejriwal government if it comes to power.
Bidhuri accused AAP of spreading misinformation about the BJP’s intentions, asserting that the party is committed to maintaining these benefits.
In addition to retaining existing schemes, the BJP has promised to implement the Ayushman Bharat health insurance program in its first Cabinet meeting if elected.
To strengthen its position, the party has begun gathering voter feedback to shape its election manifesto.
Meanwhile, AAP has taken early steps in its campaign by releasing its first list of 11 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, expected in early 2025.
Although the Election Commission of India (ECI) has yet to announce official dates, the polls will decide the fate of the 70-member Delhi Assembly.
In the 2020 elections, AAP secured a landslide victory, winning 62 seats, leaving the BJP far behind.
As both parties prepare for the upcoming contest, the stage is set for a high-stakes battle in the capital.
