Chess champion Tania Sachdev criticizes Delhi government for lack of recognition

Date:

India’s chess scene is thriving, with players like D Gukesh achieving historic milestones. However, woman grandmaster Tania Sachdev has expressed disappointment over the lack of recognition for chess players by the Delhi government.

In a social media post, Tania, a two-time national champion and Arjuna awardee, called out Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, highlighting the state government’s indifference toward her achievements.

“Having represented India since 2008, it’s disheartening to see no recognition from the Delhi government for chess achievements. States that celebrate their champions inspire excellence and motivate talent. Unfortunately, Delhi has yet to take this step,” she wrote.

Tania listed her accomplishments, including a team bronze and an individual medal at the 2022 Chess Olympiad and a historic team gold at the 2024 Chess Olympiad, noting that these feats remain unacknowledged by the Delhi government.

“As someone who proudly represents Delhi and India, I hope @AamAadmiParty @AtishiAAP ma’am @ArvindKejriwal sir see value in supporting chess athletes,” she added.

Atishi promptly responded, assuring Tania that the government values athletes and is open to discussing how chess players can be better supported.

“Hi Tania, we have always supported our athletes, especially in schools. Would love to meet you and understand what more can be done for chess players,” Atishi wrote, promising her office would arrange a meeting soon.

World Championship bronze medalist boxer Gaurav Bidhuri joined the conversation, criticizing Delhi’s lack of support for athletes. “Why doesn’t anyone raise the issue of discrimination Delhi athletes face? We win the same medals for India but are treated differently across states,” he posted.

He lamented that Delhi’s athletes are often ignored, saying, “Hum Delhiwale toh orphans hai (we Delhiites are like orphans).”
