Congress leader Rajiv Shukla on Monday criticized both the BJP and AAP for the delayed allotment of economically weaker section (EWS) flats built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in Delhi.
Out of the 35,744 completed flats, only 4,833 have been allotted so far, Shukla revealed at a press conference.
Shukla alleged that the two parties were embroiled in a tussle over taking credit for the project, resulting in the stagnation of allotments. “The Congress-led central government had approved the construction of 52,344 EWS flats at 14 locations under JNNURM with a budget of Rs 2,415 crore.
Of these, 35,744 flats were completed years ago, but only 4,833 have been allotted,” he said.
He further stated that 30,303 flats are ready for allotment but remain unoccupied due to political wrangling. “Additionally, 16,600 under-construction flats are now in a dilapidated state because of this inaction,” Shukla added.
On September 18, 2023, the Delhi High Court formed a high-power committee and directed that the flats be allotted promptly. However, Shukla expressed disappointment over the lack of action by both the state and central governments even after the court’s intervention.
Highlighting the Congress’ contributions, Shukla praised former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s leadership, claiming her administration was the only one that effectively worked for the city’s welfare.
“I believe Delhiites will bring Congress back to power on February 5,” he said, expressing optimism for the upcoming elections.
Delhi is set to vote on February 5, with the counting of votes scheduled for February 8. Neither the BJP nor AAP responded immediately to Shukla’s allegations.
