Delhi’s expanding middle class, which played a crucial role in bringing Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to power following Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement, is at the center of a political battle that could reshape the city’s leadership.
The vote count on February 8 will determine whether this crucial segment continues to support Kejriwal or has shifted its allegiance.
Both the BJP and AAP made strong efforts to woo middle-class voters— the central government offered tax benefits in the 2025 Union Budget, while AAP tailored its manifesto to address their concerns.
While many appreciate AAP’s initiatives in education, healthcare, and welfare services, they also express disappointment over unmet promises and governance issues.
Rakesh Kumar from Trilokpuri voiced frustration, saying that while the middle class initially backed Kejriwal for clean governance and development, scandals and ministerial arrests overshadowed progress.
Similarly, businessman Devendra Tyagi from Chhatarpur criticized the lack of civic improvements, lamenting deteriorating roads and the ongoing power struggle between Delhi and the central government.
Air pollution is another pressing concern. Dr. Rakesh, an orthopaedic specialist in Dwarka, was undecided even at the polling booth, frustrated by the lack of action on pollution.
Meanwhile, IT professional Mahesh and his wife Renuka Wanjare in Kiran Garden felt middle-class struggles were ignored, as rising bills and commuting issues remained unaddressed. Engineer Faizal highlighted inflation as a key hardship.
Job creation remains a top priority. Voters like Raj Kumari and Harshvardhan Siddhartha hoped for better employment prospects, while others in Seelampur worried about sanitation and infrastructure.
Families in Krishna Nagar were divided—women blamed BJP for business losses, while men held AAP responsible, but all were disillusioned by politicians prioritizing freebies over fundamental issues.
