The Election Commission of India (ECI) has registered a case against Parvesh Verma, a former MP and BJP candidate for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
Verma, contesting from the New Delhi constituency against AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit, was accused of distributing shoes to people at a temple in the capital.
A video shared by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on X showed Verma, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma and a two-time MP from West Delhi, putting shoes on elderly women and seeking their blessings. Supporters in the video were heard chanting “long live Parvesh Verma.”
Acting on a complaint from an advocate, the returning officer for the New Delhi constituency instructed the Mandir Marg police station to file a first information report (FIR) against Verma.
In the directive, the returning officer referenced Section 123 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which classifies offering gifts, promises, or gratification by a candidate or their agents as corrupt practices.
The letter emphasized, “Immediate investigation into the matter is required, and appropriate action under the MCC and Section 123 of the RP Act, 1951, must be initiated. A report on the action taken should be submitted at the earliest.” Following the directive, an FIR was registered against the BJP leader.
Delhi is set to vote on February 5, with the election results to be announced on February 8. The New Delhi constituency is a high-stakes seat, with Verma facing strong opponents in Kejriwal, the AAP supremo, and Sandeep Dikshit, a two-time MP and son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
