Who Was Gangubai Kathiawadi?

Gangubai Kathiawadi/Kothewali was unique. She was born Gangubai Harjivandas into a family of lawyers and educators in Kathiawar, Gujarat, with ties to the local nobility. When she was a little child, she fled to her dream city of Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) with her father’s accountant in order to start over and pursue a career in Bollywood. The life of Gangubai Kathiawadi was shown in a Bollywood film. Alia Bhatt, the renowned actress played the role of Gangubai Kathiawadi:

Gangubai eventually came to the conclusion that she would never return home after her lover deceived her by selling her to a red-light district for ₹500 (about ₹41,000 (or $545) with inflation). Rather than becoming a victim of her circumstances, however, Gangubai seized the chance to establish herself as one of Kamathipura’s most desirable commercial sex workers.

Her decision to confront mafia don Karim Lala personally after one of his hirelings had viciously attacked her is a perfect illustration of her early resiliency. However, she was labelled the boss’ “sister” and later targeted for retaliation. That’s how she ended up in the world of gangsters, where she made innumerable connections with powerful individuals and officials and worked her way up to the top.

That being said, the most important point—which many overlook—is that the madame never exploited her position to compel other women into prostitution or to take advantage of them. In actuality, she purportedly worked to assist causes linked to the same while speaking out at conferences for women’s empowerment and to then-prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru about the importance of her field of work in society.

The mother, lovingly referred to as “Maa,” did it all, from inspiring acts for the betterment of orphans to providing counselling and sending back countless ladies who were stuck in their line of work.
