John Russell Waters (born 8 December 1948) is an Australian film, theatre, and television actor, vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and musician. He emigrated to Australia in 1968, where he gained widespread recognition. His father is the Scottish thespian, Russell Waters.

John Waters has been in the industry for more than 50 years and spent 18 years on the Australian children’s television series Play School.

John Waters Childhood

As a child, John Waters was exposed to much violence and the macabre. His boyhood was never typical, and he later incorporated the violence he witnessed into a creative picture and sold a large number of commendable films. In his youth, he debuted his films to the clandestine audience.

Waters has produced a number of other critically acclaimed films over the years, including “Female Trouble” (1974), “Polyester” (1981), “Hairspray” (1988), and “Serial Mom” (1994).

In 1969, Waters played Claude in a Sydney production of Hair, followed by Judas in Godspell and Pontius Pilate in an Australian concert performance of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Many Australians recall Waters most fondly for his nearly 20-year run on the Australian children’s television series Play School from 1972 to 1991. Throughout his tenure with Play School, he narrated numerous ABC-TV children’s video trailers.

In the 1980 film Breaker Morant, starring British actor Edward Woodward as Harry “Breaker” Morant, Waters portrayed Captain Alfred Taylor. His narration credits include Mind Games: Real-Life Adventures, Nostradamus, and Triple Zero Heroes’ “All Together Now.”

For his performance in Division 4 in 1975, Waters won the George Wallace Memorial Logie for Best New Talent at the Logie Awards. In 1988, he won the AFI Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Tom Garfield in the film Boulevard of Broken Dreams, written by Frank Howson.

He has been nominated for numerous other awards, including Best Lead Actor (in 1978 for Weekend of Shadows) and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama (in 2006 for All Saints) at the AFI Awards, as well as Most Popular Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries (in 1992 for Which Way Home) at the Logie Awards.
