A man was apprehended at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport for attempting to smuggle a diamond necklace valued at approximately ₹6 crore, according to the customs department.
The accused, an Indian national, arrived from Bangkok on Air India flight AI 356. Customs officials, using passenger profiling techniques, identified and intercepted him upon arrival. A detailed baggage inspection led to the discovery of the high-value diamond necklace.
The seized necklace is intricately designed, featuring a delicate chain adorned with oval and rectangular diamonds. Its centerpiece is a square-shaped pendant with a striking yellow diamond encircled by multiple layers of clear diamonds.
Following the seizure, customs authorities registered a case of smuggling against the individual. The jewelry was valued at ₹6,08,97,329 (Rupees Six Crore Eight Lakh Ninety-Seven Thousand Three Hundred Twenty-Nine).
Officials confiscated the necklace under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962, which permits the seizure of smuggled goods. The accused was subsequently arrested and is facing legal proceedings under the Customs Act.
Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to gather further details regarding the smuggling attempt.
