PM Modi welcomes Qatar’s Amir at Delhi airport ahead of bilateral talks

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday, marking a special diplomatic gesture. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was also present during the welcome.

PM Modi shared a post on X, stating, “Went to the airport to welcome my brother, Amir of Qatar H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. Wishing him a fruitful stay in India and looking forward to our meeting tomorrow.”

The Qatari leader is on a two-day state visit to India from February 17 to 18. During his stay, he will engage in discussions with Jaishankar, PM Modi, and President Droupadi Murmu.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit aims to enhance the growing strategic and economic partnership between the two nations.

Sheikh Al Thani is accompanied by a high-ranking delegation comprising ministers, senior officials, and business leaders. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to meet with PM Modi to discuss key aspects of India-Qatar relations.

Additionally, both countries will sign multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering various sectors.

Invited by PM Modi, this marks Sheikh Al Thani’s second official visit to India, following his first in March 2015.

As part of the visit, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Commerce Ministry will host a business forum in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The event will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and investors to explore economic collaborations between India and Qatar. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal will inaugurate the forum alongside the Qatari Amir.

India and Qatar have steadily strengthened ties in trade, investment, energy, technology, and cultural exchanges. The MEA highlighted that the Indian diaspora in Qatar, the country’s largest expatriate community, plays a significant role in its economic and social development.
