Senior Delhi Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit, the party’s candidate from the New Delhi constituency, has initiated civil and criminal defamation lawsuits against AAP leaders Chief Minister Atishi and MP Sanjay Singh.
The cases arise from allegations made during a December 26, 2024, press conference in which the AAP leaders accused Dikshit of accepting “crores of rupees” from the BJP and conspiring to undermine AAP’s electoral prospects.
Dikshit has denied the allegations, calling them baseless and defamatory, and is seeking ₹10 crore in damages for harm to his reputation.
His civil defamation case was scheduled for a hearing on Monday before Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav but was adjourned to February. Advocate Sarim Javed is representing Dikshit in the Delhi High Court.
In a related criminal defamation case, the Rouse Avenue Court issued notices last week to Atishi and Sanjay Singh, directing them to appear on January 27, 2025.
The notice, issued by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Paras Dalal, pertains to the allegedly defamatory statements made by the AAP leaders.
Dikshit’s complaint, filed through lawyer Sarim Naved, claims the allegations were made without any evidence. It also notes that Atishi shared a live stream of the press conference on X (formerly Twitter), with the caption: “BJP is helping Congress in the Delhi election.”
The post, which has received over 30,000 views, along with extensive media coverage, has allegedly harmed Dikshit’s reputation.
Despite a legal notice sent on January 2, 2025, the tweet remains online. Dikshit asserts that these actions were intended to tarnish his image and is determined to hold Atishi and Sanjay Singh accountable through both civil and criminal proceedings.
