Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday criticized the government for not engaging in dialogue with farmers, a day after farmers announced a protest march to Delhi from Noida.
Speaking at a gathering, Dhankhar questioned the disconnect between the government and the farming community. “Why is there no dialogue with farmers? Can we afford to create a boundary between the government and the farmer? This is my concern,” he said.
Dhankhar urged Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to address the issue and drew parallels with Sardar Patel’s efforts to unify India.
“You, as the Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, face a challenge similar to Sardar Patel’s mission to unify the nation. Was any written promise made by the previous agriculture minister? If so, what has become of it?” he asked.
He expressed concern over farmers’ distress, emphasizing their importance to the nation. “India’s global reputation is at its peak, yet why is our farmer suffering? Ignoring their issues reflects flawed policy-making. No force can silence the farmer’s voice, and testing their patience could cost the nation dearly,” Dhankhar warned.
Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh police detained farmers protesting in Noida at the Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal.
The protest, organized by the Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) and other groups, demanded compensation, benefits, and a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).
BKU national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait accused authorities of stopping the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march using barricades. Farmers were attempting to march to the capital, demanding solutions to agricultural issues, including MSP guarantees.
The protest, held amid heightened security and traffic advisories in the Noida-Delhi region, underscores ongoing tensions over unresolved agricultural demands.
