A live donor heart was transported 20 kilometers in just 27 minutes along a green corridor from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla Road, New Delhi, giving a 59-year-old woman suffering from end-stage heart failure a renewed chance at life.
The patient, who had been battling dilated cardiomyopathy—a condition where weakened heart muscles impair blood pumping—had been bedridden despite receiving a pacemaker years ago. A heart transplant became her only hope.
The donor was a 43-year-old man from Nagpur who had passed away due to a brain stroke. His family consented to donate his organs, enabling the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) to allocate the heart for the transplant.
The organ was retrieved from Kingsway Hospital in Nagpur on December 9, beginning its journey at 12:53 am. It was flown to Delhi via air ambulance, arriving at 3:19 am. The Delhi Traffic Police facilitated a green corridor, ensuring the heart reached the hospital by 3:57 am.
A team of expert surgeons, led by Dr. Ritwick Raj Bhuyan and Dr. Milind Hote, successfully performed the transplant.
Dr. Bhuyan emphasized the intricate coordination required, stating, “This life-saving procedure was made possible through meticulous planning and the donor family’s selfless act.” Dr. Hote added, “Organ donation is a profound gesture that changes lives. This transplant showcases the power of collaboration and medical innovation.”
The recipient, who had been on the transplant waiting list for over a decade, is now recovering well. This case highlights the importance of organ donation and the life-saving potential of advanced medical technology and teamwork.
