On May 12, Denkinger’s family announced that he had passed away at his Iowa residence at the age of 86 due to natural causes. Even though he retired from officiating in the professional leagues in 1998, his name remains one of the most recognizable among those who held his position.

Don Denkinger, a major league umpire for three decades overshadowed a career of excellence, died at a hospice facility in Waterloo, Iowa. He was 86:

As a 24-year-old college wrestler, Denkinger began officiating minor league baseball contests in 1960. Nine years later, he reached the major leagues.

During his 30-year MLB tenure, Don Denkinger was involved in some of the most intense situations ever to occur in a baseball game. One of the four World Series he officiated will likely never be forgotten.

Denkinger made a call during Game 6 of the 1985 World Series between the Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals that is so ingrained in the consciousness of MLB fans that it is commonly referred to as “The Call.”

Denkinger ruled Royals runner Jorge Orta safe at first base in the bottom of the ninth inning, despite a video replay indicating that the runner was quite plainly out. The call caused the Cardinals to lose focus and allow two runs to compel a decisive seventh game, which they ultimately won.

Don Denkinger soon became one of the most reviled figures in all of Major League Baseball. He received death threats from Cardinals fans for the botched call, which he subsequently promoted by signing autographs on stop-motion photographs of the incident.

Don Denkinger exemplifies the unyielding duty of a Major League Baseball umpire. Denkinger enjoyed 25 years of retirement, but his legacy is one of infamy.

Although few people remember his name today, it is difficult to exaggerate how controversial and despised (by some) he was in the 1980s. Denkinger conducted himself with dignity until the end of his life.
