Congress-AAP alliance turns into rivalry ahead of Delhi assembly elections

Date:

The once cordial relationship between the Congress party and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has soured, turning into a rivalry, with Congress leader Ajay Maken calling their alliance during the Delhi Lok Sabha elections this year a “mistake.”

As the Delhi assembly elections approach, Congress has made it clear that it intends to vigorously oppose AAP, with Maken even referring to Arvind Kejriwal as “Farziwal.”

The Congress party released a 12-point “white paper” titled “Mauka Mauka, Har Baar Dhoka” to criticize AAP’s governance, accusing Kejriwal of failing to deliver on key promises. Maken specifically targeted Kejriwal’s failure to implement the Janlokpal (anti-corruption ombudsman) despite campaigning on the issue.

Maken questioned why Kejriwal did not push for the Janlokpal in Punjab, where AAP has a full government, if the Delhi Lieutenant Governor was preventing it.

He argued that Kejriwal’s excuse of being blocked in Delhi was not valid, pointing out that AAP had forgotten the very issue that formed the foundation of their party.

Reflecting on the Congress-AAP alliance, Maken lamented that the support Congress extended to AAP in 2013 was a significant factor in weakening the party in Delhi. He expressed regret over the alliance, calling it a mistake that needed to be rectified.

In the lead-up to the Delhi assembly elections, Congress released its second list of 26 candidates, with Farhan Suri set to contest against AAP’s Manish Sisodia in Jangpur.

The party had previously announced its first list of 21 candidates, including Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who will challenge Kejriwal in New Delhi.
