Haryana Changes Class 1 Admission Rules: Minimum Age Now 6 Years from 2026–27 Session

Date:

In a major shift in school education policy, the Haryana government has revised the rules for admission to Class 1. From the academic session 2026–27, only children who have completed six years of age will be eligible for admission to Class 1.

This move aims to strengthen foundational learning and ensure that children enter formal schooling at an appropriate age.

Relief for Parents: September Cut-Off Relaxation

The government has also provided some relief to parents. Children who turn six years old by September 30 will still be eligible for admission.

Under the Haryana Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2011, this six-month relaxation allows children to enroll in Class 1 as soon as they complete six years within the extended period.

Rules Amended Under New Policy

To implement this change, the Haryana School Education Rules, 2003 have been amended. The new rules have been officially notified as the Haryana School Education (Amendment) Rules, 2026.

The announcement was made by Principal Secretary of the School Education Department, Vijay Singh Dahiya.

Earlier, children could take admission in Class 1 at the age of five, but now the minimum age has been increased to six years.

Change Implemented in Three Phases

This decision aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP), which recommends six years as the minimum age for Class 1 admission.

Haryana implemented this change in a phased manner:

  • 2024–25 session: Minimum age set at 5 years
  • 2025–26 session: Increased to 5.5 years
  • 2026–27 session: Now fixed at 6 years

What Will Be the Impact on Students?

The new rule will have a direct impact on early education:

  • Children below six years will not be eligible for direct admission to Class 1
  • Those turning six by September 30 can still apply
  • Many children may need to spend an additional year in pre-primary or kindergarten classes
  • The move is expected to improve age-appropriate learning and overall education quality
