His Dark Materials Season 4: Is There Going to be The Fourth Season of His Dark Materials?

Date:

His Dark Materials Season 4: If you’re in the mood for a heavy dose of fond memories from your youth, you’ve probably been immersing yourself in the BBC’s His Dark Materials adaptation.

His Dark Materials season three premiered over the weekend on BBC and HBO. The series is based on fantasy novels of the same name by Philip Pullman. Even though Season 3 just premiered, fans are already asking for Season 4.

His Dark Materials follows Lyra (Dafne Keen), an orphan who lives in a magical world parallel to our own but is oppressed by its ruling Magisterium. The series follows Lyra as she embarks on a mission to free the world with the help of her companion Will Parry (Amir Wilson), and it features a large cast that includes Lin-Manuel Miranda, Andrew Scott, Ruth Wilson, and Kit Connor, among others.

Season one premieres in November 2019, and season two premieres in November 2020; both have been a long time coming. Finally, on December 18, 2022, we were given access to the third season.

All eight episodes of Season 3 are now accessible on BBC iPlayer, with new episodes airing weekly on BBC One and HBO in the United Kingdom and the United States, respectively. Whether you choose to binge or patiently await the next update will determine how you watch.

We still want more. Everything we know about the upcoming fourth season of His Dark Materials is included below.

His Dark Material Season 4: Release Date

Once more, we’ll have to wait for confirmation of a fourth season before learning anything about a premiere date. But even if a new sequel is announced, we know that making a movie takes a long time, so we won’t be able to watch this one until at least 2024.

Is There Going to be The Fourth Season of His Dark Materials?

Unfortunately, there has been no confirmation of the fourth season of His Dark Materials, and it’s looking like this one *might* not happen.

Because each season of the HDM TV show corresponds to one of Philip Pullman’s novels in the trilogy, the books serve as inspiration for the show. The first two seasons are speculated to be based on the books Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife, while the third is expected to focus on the third and final book, The Amber Spyglass.

We would caution against saying “never.” The producers of His Dark Materials could decide to keep the show going even if the books aren’t. Additionally, Philip Pullman wrote a new trilogy called The Book of Dust that takes place in the same universe as his HDM novels.

La Belle Sauvage, the first book in the Book of Dust series, takes place 12 years before the events of Northern Lights. Meanwhile, Lyra is now 21 in the sequel The Secret Commonwealth, which is set after His Dark Materials. We haven’t given up on writing book #3 yet.

That means there’s a lot of fodder for future TV adaptations!

His Dark Materials Season 4: Cast

Dafne Keen, who plays Lyra, expressed her regret to The Express, saying, “I’m actually quite sad that it’s ending.” His Dark Materials was canceled after three seasons.

“I’m going to miss working with the same crew and the same cast that I’ve been working with for the past five years or so, and that makes me sad. It’s sad to think that I used to visit Cardiff once a year and that I spent an average of eight months there each year. No longer will I engage in [that].”

Who might star in His Dark Materials season four?

Before we can even begin to guess at potential cast members for season 4, production on the fourth season must begin. Yet, we anticipate returning cast members in subsequent installments. That means:

  • Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua
  • Amir Wilson as Will Parry
  • Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter
  • James McAvoy as Lord Asriel Belacqua
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby
  • Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkala
  • Jade Anouka as Ruta Skadi
  • Simone Kirby as Mary Malone
  • Will Keen as Father MacPhail
  • Kit Connor as Lyra’s daemon Pan

…providing all are still alive and well, of course.
