Ammonia levels surge in Yamuna, Delhi faces 5–10% water supply cuts

Date:

Delhi is bracing for water shortages as the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) announces a 5–10% reduction in water supply from key treatment plants due to high ammonia levels in the Yamuna River at the Wazirabad pond.

Ammonia concentrations exceeding 5.0 ppm have significantly curtailed water production at the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant, which is operating at 25–50% below capacity.

To manage the crisis, water supply is being rationed from the Haiderpur Phase-I, Phase-II, Bawana, and Dwarka treatment plants until the situation improves.

Neighborhoods expected to face water shortages include areas served by these plants, such as Pitampura, Rohini, Paschim Vihar, and Dwarka.

Additionally, several key locations and localities—including Majnu Ka Tila, ISBT, GPO, ITO, Defence Colony, Greater Kailash, South Extension, Moolchand, Rajghat, and parts of South Delhi and Cantonment areas—will be impacted.

The DJB has urged residents to conserve water and assured them that tankers will be available on request. A Central Control Room has been set up to assist with tanker requests.

While apologizing for the inconvenience, the DJB emphasized that efforts are ongoing to stabilize water production and mitigate the impact of the crisis.

Ammonia contamination in the Yamuna River has been a recurring issue, often disrupting Delhi’s water supply. The board has called for the judicious use of water and assured citizens of continuous efforts to address the pollution at its source.
