Farmers have announced plans to march to Delhi on December 14, citing the government’s failure to initiate dialogue on their demands.
A group of 101 farmers will lead this protest to press for key issues, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), loan waivers, and other pending grievances.
This decision follows the cancellation of an earlier march on December 8, after tensions escalated and several farmers were injured, including one in serious condition, now receiving treatment at PGI hospital.
Farmer leaders explained that safety concerns prompted the withdrawal of the contingent, initially part of the “Dilli Chalo” campaign.
Earlier, on December 6, farmers attempting to march from the Shambhu Border were stopped by authorities, who cited a lack of required permissions to enter Haryana en route to Delhi.
Despite these setbacks, the farmers, under the leadership of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, remain resolute in their movement.
The farmers’ demands include:
- A legal guarantee for MSP
- Loan waivers
- Pensions for farmers and agricultural laborers
- No increase in electricity tariffs
- Withdrawal of police cases against protesters
- Justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court rejected a plea seeking immediate removal of road blockades caused by ongoing farmer protests in Punjab.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Manmohan stated that similar issues are already under consideration and declined to entertain repetitive petitions.
Farmers have been camping at border points like Shambhu and Khanauri between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, after their march to Delhi was blocked by security forces. Their renewed determination sets the stage for continued tensions and potential clashes.
