KTR urges Delhi memorial for former PM PV Narasimha Rao

Date:

Following the Telangana Assembly’s resolution seeking the Bharat Ratna for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader KT Rama Rao (KTR) called on the state government to urge the Centre to establish a memorial for former PM PV Narasimha Rao in New Delhi.

KTR acknowledged Dr. Manmohan Singh as a highly respected economist across party lines and welcomed the state’s decision to install his statue.

However, he emphasized PV Narasimha Rao’s critical role in implementing transformative reforms as India’s Prime Minister and highlighted the absence of a memorial for him in the national capital.

KTR demanded the state government pass a resolution to honor Narasimha Rao and pressure the Union government to establish a memorial.

He criticized the state government for avoiding discussions about Narasimha Rao due to political considerations, asserting that the late leader, a prominent figure from Telangana, deserved recognition at the national level.

BRS MLC K Kavitha also criticized the Congress for its alleged disrespect towards Narasimha Rao, pointing out that his last rites were not conducted in Delhi.

She contrasted this with Telangana’s celebration of his legacy, including a grand memorial in Hyderabad. Kavitha urged the Centre to rectify this oversight by creating a memorial in Delhi for Narasimha Rao.

Meanwhile, a political controversy erupted over Dr. Manmohan Singh’s cremation at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat instead of Rajghat. Congress leaders accused the BJP-led central government of showing “hatred” by refusing Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s request for a Rajghat ceremony.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri dismissed the accusations, pointing out Congress’s own history of disregarding Narasimha Rao, noting that his body was not brought to the AICC headquarters after his death.

The issue has reignited debates over honoring former Prime Ministers and their legacies.
