Ramakrishnan was born and grew up in the Ontario city of Mississauga. She was born to Eelam Tamil Hindu parents who fled Sri Lanka’s civil war and went to live in Canada.

She says that she is Tamil Canadian instead of Sri Lankan. She went to Lisgar Middle School when she was in grade school and Meadowvale Secondary School when she was in high school.

Ramakrishnan decided to become an actress in her last year at Meadowvale. Less than a year later, she got a part in the Netflix teen romance show Never Have I Ever.
