Marilyn Monroe is one of Hollywood’s most enduring stars, but the sadness of her short life often overshadows what an amazing actress and in-demand face she was on-screen. Marilyn Monroe had 33 acting credits in a career that lasted only 15 years. You might be thinking about her net worth and who got her estate when she died.
How Much Was Marilyn Monroe’s Net Worth?
Marilyn Monroe was an American singer, actress, and model who was worth $800,000 when she died in 1962. Considering inflation, that’s the same as about $7 million in dollars today. Marilyn’s film salary was just under $3 million over the course of her work.
When inflation is considered, this is the same as about $24 million before taxes. She wasn’t very good with money. She spent a lot on strangers, relatives, and workers, and she also bought herself expensive jewelry, clothes, and other things.
Monroe lived in style and easily spent money on clothes, jewelry, and her house. She was also very kind to her friends and those working for her. So, when Monroe’s estate was finally settled, it was said to be worth only $370,000, which is about $3.5 million today.
Monroe was a blonde bombshell with more than 30 performing credits, including “How to Marry a Millionaire” (1953), “There’s No Business Like Show Business” (1954), “The Seven Year Itch” (1955), “Bus Stop” (1956), “The Prince and the Showgirl” (1957), and “Some Like It Hot” (1959).
In the middle of the 1950s, Marilyn and photographer Milton Greene started their own production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions. Marilyn was the chief producer of “The Prince and the Showgirl.” Monroe was #6 on the list of the 50 best female American screen legends made by the American Film Institute.
She was also on the Smithsonian Institution’s list of the “100 Most Important Americans of All Time.” Marilyn’s life was cut short when she died in August 1962 from an overdose of barbiturates. She was only 36 years old.

Value of an Estate and Who Owns It
Marilyn’s total net worth was around $370,000, according to her will, which was filed in Los Angeles County when she died. This was after settlement costs and estate fees were paid. In Norma Jeane Mortenson’s will, she left $10,000 to both her half-sister and the person who had helped her for many years.
She will also put $5,000 into a college fund for the child of her helper. In the will, her mother got a $100,000 trust fund. Monroe left her property to Lee Strasberg, who was her beloved acting teacher. Lee and his first wife, Paula, raised Marilyn as if she were their own.
Throughout her life, they were very close. Lee Strasberg also got 75% of her “residual estate,” which is another name for her intellectual property rights. The other 25% went to Dr. Marianne Kris, Monroe’s doctor.
Why is the Death of Marilyn Monroe So Strange?
Monroe was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars for more than ten years. She was called a “s*x symbol” because of her roles in movies like “Niagara” and “How to Marry a Millionaire,” but she was also a very skilled actress.
Monroe wanted to be seen and known for who she was as a whole person. She worked on new projects and posed for magazines like Vogue and Cosmopolitan in the months before she died.
When Monroe’s maid, Eunice Murray, knocked on her bedroom door on August 5, 1962, and she didn’t answer, she became increasingly worried. Monroe was found dead in her Brentwood home, where the LAPD was called. She was 36 years old.
