A major controversy has erupted in Varanasi’s Madanpura area over the rediscovered Siddheshwar Mahadev Temple after the house owner declared that no worship or rituals will be allowed in the temple premises.
This temple was recently uncovered in a Muslim-majority area, where the structure had been locked for several decades. The house, where the temple stands, has been home to Shahabuddin’s family. According to Shahabuddin, the house was purchased by his ancestor, Taj Baba, from a Karahi Estate noble in 1916.
Shahabuddin stated:
“Since the purchase, the temple has remained in its current state, and there was neither any worship material nor a Shivling present. Therefore, we will not allow any puja or religious activities here.”
This declaration, “No conch, no worship,” has stirred emotions and raised concerns over the temple’s fate. Many locals are questioning whether the doors of this ancient temple will remain locked or if it will be reopened for worship in the city known as the ‘City of Temples’.
The situation remains tense, with heritage activists and religious groups expressing their intent to appeal for restoring the temple’s sanctity and worship rights.
