Rahul Gandhi expressed deep concern over the worsening health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on a hunger strike demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) and debt relief. Gandhi called on the government to engage in dialogue and end the hunger strike promptly.
In his statement, Gandhi lamented the need for farmers to repeatedly resort to protests and hunger strikes to have their voices heard. Referring to the deaths of over 700 farmers during the previous protests, he criticized the government for remaining “insensitive” despite the sacrifices.
He pointed out that the parliamentary standing committee on agriculture, which includes leaders from all parties, has also acknowledged most of the farmers’ demands, including MSP.
Reiterating his stance, Gandhi said, “Just as the Modi government was forced to repeal the farm laws, it will be compelled to accept these demands as well. For the benefit of farmers and the nation, it is better for the government to act sooner rather than later.”
