Delhi’s chief minister-designate Rekha Gupta announced on Thursday that the first installment of the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, a financial assistance program for women, will be credited to beneficiaries’ bank accounts by March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day.
Under this scheme, eligible women will receive ₹2,500 per month, fulfilling one of the BJP’s key electoral promises.
Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, is set to become Delhi’s fourth woman chief minister. She reaffirmed her commitment to implementing the BJP’s poll pledges, emphasizing that all 48 BJP MLAs in Delhi would work towards realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the capital.
“We will ensure that financial aid reaches women’s accounts by March 8,” she stated.
During the election campaign, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which previously governed Delhi, promised a monthly income support of ₹2,100 if re-elected.
In response, the BJP raised the offer to ₹2,500 per month, positioning itself as the more generous option. The BJP president, J.P. Nadda, had assured voters that this scheme would be approved in the government’s first cabinet meeting.
Apart from the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, the BJP manifesto includes several other welfare measures. The party pledged:
- A one-time financial assistance of ₹21,000 for every pregnant woman in Delhi.
- A ₹500 subsidy per LPG cylinder to reduce household expenses.
- One free LPG cylinder on Holi and Diwali to ease festive burdens.
Throughout the campaign, the BJP countered AAP’s claims that the new government would discontinue existing welfare programs. The party dismissed these allegations as misleading and fear-mongering tactics intended to sway voters.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while launching the BJP manifesto booklet, addressed these concerns. He stated that false rumors were being spread that a BJP-led government would revoke free schemes.
He recalled an instance where a staff member at his residence mentioned receiving multiple calls warning that BJP would halt welfare initiatives. Expressing disappointment over such tactics, he remarked, “I have never witnessed such a low level of electioneering in my public life.”
Shah assured voters that all existing welfare schemes would continue under BJP rule. Additionally, the new government has vowed to investigate alleged corruption and inefficiencies in the execution of previous schemes to ensure transparency and better implementation.
