Russia develops mrna cancer vaccine, set to be free for patients

Date:

Russia has announced the development of an mrna cancer vaccine, which will be provided free of cost to cancer patients in the country. The russian ministry of health claims that the vaccine, designed to treat cancer, will be available by early 2025.

According to the state news agency tass, this vaccine has been developed with the assistance of multiple research centers. However, officials clarified that the vaccine will not be used for preventing cancer but specifically for treating existing cancer patients. Andrei kaprin, the head of the radiology medical research center (rmrc) under the ministry of health, confirmed the planned launch timeline of early 2025.

Alexander gintsburg, director of the gamaleya national research center for epidemiology and microbiology (gnrcem), stated that pre-clinical trials of the vaccine have shown it can suppress tumor growth and potential metastasis. The name of the vaccine has not yet been disclosed, nor have details about the specific types of cancer it targets or its effectiveness been revealed.

The vaccine is based on mrna technology, which works by giving genetic instructions to human cells to produce proteins that can combat cancer cells. This technology has been widely recognized due to its success in covid-19 vaccines.

Cancer rates in russia have been rising, with over 635,000 cases reported in 2022. Despite this challenge, russia has been making significant advancements in medical research. Previously, during the covid-19 pandemic, russia successfully developed and distributed its sputnik v vaccine globally.

The development of this cancer vaccine marks another step in russia’s efforts to improve healthcare and fight life-threatening diseases.
