Transgender candidate Rajan Singh files nomination for Kalkaji seat in Delhi assembly elections

Date:

Rajan Singh, a transgender candidate representing the “Aam Janata Party,” has filed their nomination for the Kalkaji constituency in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. The high-profile seat is currently held by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who submitted her nomination papers on Tuesday.

Other key contenders include the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ex-Lok Sabha MP Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress candidate Alka Lamba, a former AAP member who now leads the Congress’s national women’s wing.

Kalkaji constituency has a total of 1,94,515 voters, comprising 1,06,893 men, 87,617 women, and five transgender voters. The assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with results to be declared on February 8. The AAP, which has governed Delhi since December 2013, faces a tough contest in this election.

Rajan Singh, a 27-year-old transgender activist, has declared assets worth ₹92.35 lakh in their affidavit to the Election Commission. This includes ₹10,000 in cash, 1,300 grams of gold valued at ₹92 lakh, and ₹25,000 in a bank account.

Singh previously contested the South Delhi Lok Sabha seat as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections. Despite receiving only 300 votes in a contest won by Ramvir Singh Bidhuri of the BJP, Singh has remained active in public and political life.

In their 2024 affidavit, Singh declared assets worth ₹15.1 lakh, including 200 grams of gold valued at ₹14 lakh, ₹1 lakh in cash, and ₹10,382 in bank deposits. Their significant rise in assets since the last election has drawn attention.

Originally from Bihar, Singh now resides in Sangam Vihar, Delhi, and is a registered voter in the area. They serve as the head of the “National Transgender Welfare Council,” advocating for the rights and welfare of the transgender community.

Singh’s candidacy is notable as it highlights representation for the transgender community in Delhi’s political landscape.

Their participation in the Kalkaji race adds a unique dimension to a highly competitive constituency, drawing attention to issues of inclusivity and diversity in the democratic process.
