To ensure a peaceful resolution, the Army and the Assam Rifles each sent one column to the Songdo area. Competition in the Bishnupur market was disrupted after the introduction of new BSF firms.

Until after midnight, sources say, shots were reportedly fired back and forth near Yaingangpokpi in Imphal East. The situation is being monitored carefully at the moment.

Since ethnic violence erupted on May 3 when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill areas to protest the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe recognition, over 120 people have been killed and over 3,000 injured. Along with the local Manipur Police, the government has sent in an estimated 40,000 central security troops to restore order.
