What Happened To Arjuna Elephant?

During the elephant capture operation near Yeslur in Sakleshpur on Monday, sixty-four-year-old Arjuna, the elephant that carried the golden howdah during the Dasara parade, lost his life in a clash with a wild elephant.

The goal of the Forest Department’s operation has been to apprehend unruly tuskers in the Hassan ranges of Sakleshpur, Alur, Belur, and Yeslur. According to early reports, Arjuna was attacked by a wild tusker during the procedure and died from wounds to his stomach.

The department has been compelled to halt the operation due to the event. Up until 2019, when he turned 60, Arjuna carried the 750-kg howdah eight times during the Dasara parade. Apart from that, the animal took part in other operations to capture elephants.

Staff members from the Forest Department located a tusker that needed to be captured that day during the operation. The group spotted a dozen elephants in a herd. The target elephant needed to be taken out of the group following protocol to be captured.

It is reported that the personnel isolated the tusker and used a tranquillizer dart to subdue it with the assistance of trained elephants. The tusker charged at the domesticated elephants while under the effect of the tranquillizer. Some of the domesticated elephants retreated, but Arjuna refused to back down.

The team members and caregivers departed the area, assuming the worst. After fighting the tusker, Arjuna was severely injured and died a short while later. Staff members and caregivers were devastated by the death. As soon as Venu, Arjuna’s caregiver, heard about the death, he passed out. He has been moved to a Sakleshpur hospital. For years, he has been connected to the animal.

Operation Conducted

On November 24, work began in Belur taluk to put radio collars on nine wild elephants. Arjuna and the other tamed elephants were brought in to carry out the operation. Thus far, the department has been successful in radio-collaring three female elephants and capturing two tuskers for transfer.

After the animals are sedated, the radio collars are fastened around their necks to allow for movement tracking. To prevent conflicts between humans and elephants, the department notifies the local population in regions where elephants are present about the movement of herds.
