Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar has arrived in Bengaluru to participate in the second day of the opposition meeting. The gathering aims to bring together like-minded parties with the common objective of challenging the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Although Pawar missed the first day, where 26 parties united, his presence on the concluding day highlights his commitment to opposition unity.
Sharad Pawar’s Political Challenges
Before the meeting, the NCP faced internal turmoil as his nephew Ajit Pawar joined the NDA government in Maharashtra with eight other MLAs, leading to a split in the party. In response, Sharad Pawar took disciplinary action against the MLAs, highlighting his authority and firm stance.
Simultaneously, the Bharatiya Janata Party is convening a meeting of 38 parties in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the national capital. This gathering reflects the BJP’s efforts to consolidate support and strategize for the upcoming elections.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hosted a dinner for opposition leaders on the first day of the meeting, fostering camaraderie among the attendees. Congress leader BK Hariprasad expressed optimism, signaling a positive start to the opposition meeting.
He confidently stated that the BJP’s reign would end in 2024. When asked about the NDA meeting, he humorously referred to it as the “National Disaster Alliance.”
Leadership Dynamics and Congress’ Approach
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed confidence in the country’s people, anticipating a massive defeat for the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He emphasized that the opposition’s goal is to keep the focus on issues rather than making it a battle between leaders, aiming for a “Modi vs people” contest.
The meeting aims to appoint a convenor and form groups to address various issues while deciding on a common minimum program.
Sources suggest that the Congress party is keen on having the chairperson position, given its status as the largest party in the opposition group. However, Congress may be flexible and willing to respect the collective decision of the opposition parties.
