The classical vocalists Ehsaan Hydari and Vidya Rao, who are both well-known for their work in the thumri and Dadra forms of music, are the parents of Aditi Rao Hydari, who was born in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. The mother of Aditi Rao Hydari is a half-Telugu, Chitrapur Saraswat from Mangalore, and a devout Buddhist. Born into Hinduism, Aditi Rao Hydari’s father was a Bohri Muslim who passed away in 2013.

Hydari is descended from two royal lineages: Raja J. Rameshwar Rao, a former Raja of the Wanaparthy family, and Sir Muhammad Saleh Akbar Hydari. Aditi Rao Hydari began her career as a Bharatanatyam dancer at the age of eleven, having developed an interest in the art form through her relationship with Leela Samson. She trained students and took part in theatrical productions while touring India and abroad with Samson’s dance company, Spanda. Hydari wrapped up filming her debut feature film, Sringaram, early in 2004. The film featured her as the title character of a devadasi, a 19th-century temple dancer.

The Tamil film was produced in collaboration with director Sharada Ramanathan and renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Padmini Ravi. Ramanathan was taken aback by Hydari’s young, vulnerable face and how much she resembled dancer Shobana when he watched her perform at a conference.
