It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rachael Lillis, the talented voice actress who brought beloved characters like Misty and Jessie to life in the English adaptations of the Pokémon television series and movies. Rachael was 46 years old. Her incredible contributions to the world of anime will forever be remembered by fans around the globe. Her voice and spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who enjoyed her work.
A Brave Battle Against Breast Cancer
On Monday, beloved voice actor Veronica Taylor—known for her portrayal of Ash in the Pokémon series—shared a deeply saddening update on social media. With a heavy heart, she announced that Lillis passed away on Saturday after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
“It is with great sadness that I convey the unexpected death of Rachael Lillis on Saturday evening of the weekend, 10th of August 2024. Rachael had an extraordinary ability—a beam of light that shone in her tone whether singing or speaking. She’s going to be remembered forever for every animated role she took on with great performances, like Misty from Pokémon, and Jessie, who is most beloved,” Taylor stated in her post.
“Rachael felt extremely grateful for all the love and support that was offered to her while she fought cancer. It really did have a positive impact. Her loved ones would like to express their thanks during this period of mourning and request privacy. Memorial services are being planned and will be announced at a later date,” Taylor elaborated.
Messages of Remembrance and Gratitude
On Monday as well, Laurie Orr, Lillis’ sister and organizer of a GoFundMe page to assist with covering recent medical expenses, announced the veteran voice actor’s death over the weekend.
“With a heart full of sorrow, I share that Rachael has passed away. She left us peacefully on Saturday, without discomfort, and we are thankful for that. She’s in heaven, with the angels and family members who have passed away before her, surrounded by endless love,” Orr stated.

Rachael Lillis was born on July 8, 1978, in the Niagara Falls area, New York City. She had opera training before becoming a voice actor. In 423 episodes of the Pokémon TV series, she provided the voices of Misty and Jessie between 1997 and 2015. Lillis also joined the cast in similar roles in the 1998 Pokémon: The First Movie—Mewtwo Strikes Back, and the Pokémon: The Movie 2000 project.
