Auto and taxi drivers in Karnataka seek welfare schemes similar to Delhi

Date:

A delegation of auto and taxi drivers, along with members of the Karnataka unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), met Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy at his residence on Monday to discuss the challenges faced by drivers in the state.

The delegation, representing the Peace Auto & Taxi Drivers Association, submitted a memorandum urging the government to implement welfare schemes similar to those introduced by the AAP government in Delhi.

Mohammed Ayyub Khan, president of the Auto Drivers Association, emphasized that adopting welfare policies like those in Delhi could significantly improve the lives of drivers in Karnataka.

“The five guarantees provided in Delhi have transformed the lives of auto drivers there. We hope Karnataka follows this model to provide similar relief,” he said.

He further highlighted the struggles faced by drivers, noting that schemes offering life insurance, educational assistance, and uniform allowances would alleviate the financial pressures many drivers endure daily.

“Such measures could help lakhs of drivers escape poverty and improve their standard of living,” Khan stated.

The memorandum, signed by Ayyub Khan, Raghu Narayan Gowdru, and Syed Ateeq Ahmed—leaders of the Peace Auto and Taxi Drivers Association in Bengaluru—stressed the urgent need for government intervention.

Syed Ateeq Ahmed added, “We have appealed to the Karnataka government to prioritize the welfare of auto and taxi drivers, just as the AAP government has done in Delhi.”

The delegation expressed optimism that implementing similar policies would provide significant relief to drivers, enabling them to cope with their financial challenges and lead better lives. The minister has yet to respond to their appeal.
