After making the rounds on the Internet, a video purporting to show the “Pushpa” actress entering the elevator while wearing a skimpy black dress with a plunging neckline incited outrage. Journalist and fact-checker Abhishek Kumar of AltNews disproved the video.

The writer took to X to disclose that the video was a deepfake and that Zara Patel, a British-Indian influencer, was the girl in it instead of Mandanna. Additionally, he asked the government to take strong action against those who abuse AI for malicious purposes.

A deluge of X users denounced the worrying trend of deepfake videos in the comment area. Superstar Amitabh Bachchan retweeted the article and urged the government to file a lawsuit:

Replying to the post on Twitter, Union IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar asserted that PM Modi’s administration is punishing those who violate the law.

He wrote, “Under the IT rules notified in April 2023 – it is a legal obligation for platforms to ensure no misinformation is posted by any user AND ensure that when reported by any user or govt, misinformation is removed in 36 hrs. If platforms do not comply with this, rule 7 will apply and platforms can be taken to court by aggrieved persons under provisions of IPC. Deep fakes are the latest and even more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation and need to be dealt with by platforms.”

Another user observed that the widespread abuse of AI by trolls has led to the proliferation of cyberbullying against women. The post reads, “Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) is going to be a huge problem in India. It is already a huge problem globally. In 2020 Buzzfeed reported about a telegram bot that had created fake nude pictures of more than 680,000 women.”

The genuine woman in the video, Patel, seemed less concerned about the deepfake. The data engineer tweeted, “Well, it looks like people are making deep fakes of me lol.” Mandanna has not yet responded to the deepfake footage.
