Controversial Film ‘Ajmer 92’ Explores Dark Events of 1992 Gangrape Case?

Date:

Ajmer 92, the upcoming film directed by Pushpendra Singh, has generated significant controversy even before its release later this month. The movie delves into the horrifying gangrape case that shook the city of Ajmer over three decades ago, shedding light on the darker aspects of the events and the exploitation of grief-stricken girls by powerful men in Rajasthan.

The film is set to hit theaters in July 2023 and revolves around the scandalous series of events that unfolded in Ajmer in 1992. The story became public attention through a report published in the Hindi newspaper, ‘Dainik Navjyoti.’ According to available information, members of the influential Khadim family, Farooq, and Nafis Chishti, were at the forefront of a group of young men involved in the heinous acts.

Their modus operandi involved gang-raping young women and blackmailing them at a secluded farmhouse or bungalow. Shockingly, it was revealed that local authorities were aware of these events a year prior but failed to take any legal action.

Investigations later uncovered that Farooq Chishti had befriended a young girl from Sophia Senior Secondary School in Ajmer, coercing her into introducing him to her schoolmates. This began a nightmare for over 250 victims, aged between 11 and 20.

The girls were subjected to gangrape at the farmhouse by young men led by the Chistis, who then photographed them in compromising positions. These explicit photos were subsequently used to intimidate and silence the victims, preventing them from filing complaints. The truth came to light when the obscene images were leaked, forcing the police to take action.

In September 1992, 18 serial offenders were charged in court. The first eight to trial were reportedly sentenced to life in prison, but four were later acquitted by the Rajasthan High Court in 2001. Farooq Chishti, however, was convicted by a fast-track court in Ajmer in 2007, only to be released by the High Court in 2013 based on time already served.

The recently released teaser of ‘Ajmer 92’ provides a glimpse into the plight of rape victims who were blackmailed by influential individuals in the town, ultimately leading many of them to take their own lives. The film boasts a talented cast including Manoj Joshi, Karan Verma, Rajesh Sharma, Zarina Wahab, Brijendra Kala, and Shalini Kapoor. It is written by Suraj Pal Rajak, Pushpendra Singh, and Gyanendra Pratap Singh.

However, ‘Ajmer 92’ has not been without its share of controversies. Several Islamic organizations, including Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, have called for a ban on the film, claiming it deliberately defames the Ajmer Dargah and the khakis. Anjuman Moinia Fakhria Chishtiya, an organization in Ajmer, even filed a petition in the Rajasthan High Court seeking a ban on the movie. The petitioner argued that the film’s trailer contains provocative and blasphemous dialogues and negatively portrays the entire Chisti community, unfairly associating them with the incident.

Despite the backlash, the Rajasthan High Court recently dismissed the petition, allowing the film’s release to proceed as scheduled. However, the controversy surrounding ‘Ajmer 92’ underscores the sensitive nature of the subject matter and the need for responsible storytelling that respects the sentiments of the affected communities.

As audiences await the release of ‘Ajmer 92’ on July 21, it is hoped that the film will shed light on the tragic events of 1992 while maintaining sensitivity and empathy toward the victims and their families.

The controversies surrounding the movie serve as a reminder of the importance of handling such delicate topics with utmost care and respect, ensuring that justice is served to the survivors and their stories are told responsibly.
