Firefighters say it all started when an aquaculturist accidentally turned on the water supply after it had been turned off for a long time at an ancient borewell in a remote part of Razole Mandal.

The police are investigating where the gas came from and whether or not the farmer had just dug up the bank. Sridhar emphasized that putting out the fire is a top priority. He estimates that it will just take a few hours to complete.

An ONGC crew is extinguishing the fire from the nearby village of Rustumbada in the West Godavari district. Sridhar noted that there were no ONGC pipelines near the pond, but he suggested that a “gas kick” (the unexpected entry of gas into a bore well induced by a change in pressure, usually during drilling) could have started the fire.
