A fish pond with a borewell next to it. An old borewell sits here. Konaseema District Superintendent of Police P Sridhar told the news agency that water gushed first and then gas when the farmer turned on the old borewell.
The police are investigating where the gas came from and whether or not the farmer had just dug up the bank. Sridhar emphasized that putting out the fire is a top priority. He estimates that it will just take a few hours to complete.

An ONGC crew is extinguishing the fire from the nearby village of Rustumbada in the West Godavari district. Sridhar noted that there were no ONGC pipelines near the pond, but he suggested that a “gas kick” (the unexpected entry of gas into a bore well induced by a change in pressure, usually during drilling) could have started the fire.
