His performances as “Calendar” in “Mr. India,” “Pappu Pager” in “Deewana Mastana,” and “Chanu Ahmed” in Sarah Gavron’s “Brick Lane” (2007) brought him fame as an actor. For the 1990 film Ram Lakhan and the 1997 film Saajan Chale Sasural, he was twice given the Filmfare Best Comedian Award.

His most well-known role as a theater performer was “Willy Loman” in Arthur Miller’s Hindi adaptation of Death of a Salesman, Salesman Ramlal. He composed the dialogue for Kundan Shah’s legendary 1983 comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron.
