Days after Prime Minister Modi opened the new airport in Port Blair its roof collapsed

Date:

The new integrated terminal building (NITB) at the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, collapsed on Sunday, just five days after Prime Minister Modi inaugurated it.

In addition to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Union Minister of State for Road, Transport, and Highways and Civil Aviation, General (Ret.) VK Singh and several other high-ranking government officials were present for the inauguration event earlier this week.

Netizens questioned the workmanship that would lead to the ceiling of the region of the building collapsing less than a week after the building’s official opening.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh resorted to Twitter to criticize Prime Minister Modi after images and videos of the collapsed sections went viral.

These days, the Prime Minister will open everything, no matter how half-done or inadequate the infrastructure (highways, airports, bridges, railways, etc.) may be.

Ministers are eager to have him help raise their Sensex, so they are more than happy to comply. The general public ultimately bears the price. “Such a sad state of affairs in ‘New India’!” Ramesh wrote it.

On Tuesday, July 18th, Prime Minister Modi officially opened NITB.

The new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair will facilitate travel to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The tourism industry in particular stands to benefit significantly from this. Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “The building will be inaugurated tomorrow, July 18th, at 10:30 AM.”

The airport’s main facility is shaped like a shell, symbolizing the islands’ idyllic landscape. Skylights strategically positioned on the roof will allow natural light to illuminate the whole terminal for 12 hours a day.

Since passenger volume has increased significantly, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) decided to build the NITB. At a total cost of 707.73 crore, the project was successfully completed.

The new terminal, which will cover a total built-up area of 40,837 square meters, will be able to serve 1,200 passengers during peak hours and almost 40 lakh passengers yearly.

The 28 check-in kiosks, 3 boarding bridges, and 4 conveyor belts in the three-story facility will provide quick and easy travel for passengers.
